The Texas HireAbility campaign aims to connect job seekers with disabilities with employers and to raise awareness about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. The campaign is coordinated by the Texas Workforce Commission, the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities, and Texas Workforce Solutions. Texas HireAbility coincides with National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is held annually in October.
Events for Job Seekers
Part of the Texas HireAbility campaign includes job fairs and career resource events that are coordinated by local workforce development boards. Job seekers with disabilities who attend an event may have an opportunity to land a job or learn skills that could help them land a job. If you attend an event, you could connect with employers who are hiring, learn about their business, and even interview for a job. Events will also feature training sessions on interviewing for jobs, resume writing, and networking. Throughout October, events will be held in various locations across Texas. To find an event in your area, visit the Texas HireAbility Events webpage.
Resources for Employers
Texas HireAbility also provides resources for employers. Resources illustrate the benefits of hiring people with disabilities and provide guidance for how to include people with disabilities in the workplace. Some of the resources are listed below.
- The HireAbility fact sheet includes data about the advantages of employing people with disabilities and how people with disabilities can help meet workforce needs.
- The How Creating a Culture of Accessibility Positively Impacts Business video covers topics like workplace accessibility, accommodations, and assistive technologies.
- The People First Language handout describes how to speak about people with disabilities in the workplace in an objective and respectful way.
