Training on Social Security Work Incentives for youth with disabilities

Tuesday, August 11th and Thursday, August 13th

The Capacity Building Project, a program with the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University, is sponsoring a Zoom Virtual Training on Social Security Work Incentives for youth with disabilities. Registered participants will be emailed a certificate of completion at the end of the two day training. The guest speaker Sandy Hardy-Smith has over 36 years of experience in employment services for people with disabilities, including a 20-year history with the Social Security benefits planning and work incentive programs.  Sandy is the Chief Operating Officer and directs Imagine Enterprises’ Work Incentive Planning & Assistance (WIPA) in 148 Texas counties and 3 Pacific Territories; the Promoting Opportunity Demonstration (POD) in 13 Texas counties; TWS-VRS statewide referrals for Benefits Analysis; and virtual Pre-Employment Transition Services (ETS) classes. Sandy provides webinars, trainings and technical assistance on a local, state and national level, with the goal to improve the confidence and support so Social Security beneficiaries are willing to go to work, earn a living, and maintain or obtain needed health insurance.

For two 90-minute trainings, Sandy will provide a basic overview of the disability benefits offered by Social Security and the impact of work on them, including Medicaid! She will focus on transition-aged youth with disabilities and the important role that school personnel and parents play. She will introduce the various work incentives available to the beneficiary and how to request, implement, and track them.

Tuesday, August 11 – 1:00-2:30 p.m.: The session will offer a basic overview of Title 16 Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid

Thursday, August 13 – 1:00-2:30 p.m.: The session will offer a basic overview of Title 2 disability benefits and Medicare.

***When you sign up, you must sign up for both sessions. Each session will have a 5 minute break.***

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to understand:

1. the difference between Title 2 and SSI;

2. the various work incentives associated with each benefit;

3. the difference between Medicare and Medicaid;

4. what happens when a student turns 18 years old; and

5. how to locate FREE help in your area.

The Capacity Building Project at Texas A&M University invites you to join Sandy, as she provides a basic overview and clarity on this very confusing topic.
