Texas Transition Conference Slated for Feb. 4–6; Parent and Youth Stipends Now Available
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – Texas A&M University’s Center on Disability and Development, in partnership with Regional Educational Service Center VI, Statewide High School Transition Network and the Texas Effectiveness Study, will host the 2008 Texas Transition Conference at the College Station Hilton Hotel Feb. 4–6.
The TTC is an annual three-day conference that equips individuals with transition information in the hopes of improving outcomes for postsecondary education and employment opportunities for youth with disabilities. Participants come from all over the state of Texas, including educators, transition specialists, vocational coordinators, service agency representatives, parents of youth with disabilities and youth with disabilities.
Premier individuals in the field of transition will be this year's keynote speakers. Dr. Ed O’Leary will address designing and using transition-focused curricula in a standards-based world. Dr. Paula Kohler will speak on transition programming components using her taxonomy, which incorporates five specific areas: student development, student-focused planning, program structure, family involvement and interagency collaboration. Participants will also hear from other experts on a myriad of topics during 48 breakout sessions.
Stipends, provided by the Center on Disability and Development and the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, are available to parents or youth who would like to attend the conference but need financial assistance. Awarded stipends will be distributed on a first come basis to qualified individuals. Individuals requesting a stipend must be a youth with a developmental disability and/or the parent of a youth with a developmental disability. Stipends will include the cost of registration ($195) and lodging expenses (up to $52.50 per night) for individuals who travel 50 miles or more to attend the conference.
Additional details on registration and stipends are available online at http://ttc.tamu.edu. For more information, contact Cheryl Grenwelge, TTC Project Coordinator, at 979-458-1593 or cgrenwelge@tamu.edu.
